Egyptian Red Sea Diving   (continued from page 2)

The three pyramids of Giza are known throughout the world as the last of the remaining 7 wonders of the Ancient World.  They are still standing over 5000 years later.  They just recently opened the Great Pyramid for visitors.  A handful of us ventured into the pyramid.  You had to frog walk uphill through a 3 ft by 3 ft hole then it opens in the tomb of the king with a remaining sarcophagus.

The only words spoke were "WOW",  "COOL".  It is something that I will never forget.    We then walked to the legendary Sphinx and, no, it is not as big as the pyramids.  After marveling at the Sphinx and the Great Pyramid, we headed to another set of pyramids located at Saqqara (the world's oldest pyramids).  They are the first pyramids ever built in Egypt.  These are different from most and are called mastaba (step pyramids) of the Pharaoh Zosar.  Around the Zosar Pyramid, the temple still stood in parts, and we toured around its massive layout.

On our final day before heading home, we set out for a short stop at the ancient capital city of Memphis, once known as the capital of United Egypt.  Nothing remains there except a grand statue of Ramses II.  The tour of the countryside was very exciting.  We saw the farmers with their carts of vegetables riding down the road and children playing in the Nile canals.  We stopped by a carpet school and saw the children making carpets in both wool and silk.  We turned a corner and back in Cairo we were.    Our last stop before the hotel would be the Mosque of Mohammed Ali (a replica of the Blue Mosque of Istanbul).  Here we learned more about the religion and culture.  After packing, showering, and changing, we

headed for the airport, but first, we ended our trip at the famous bazaar of Khan El Khalili - this experience offers an insight into the life in the 14th century.  A visit to Egypt is indeed like a journey back in time.  The history of Egypt is overwhelming, yet its monuments, mosques, architectural and archaeological wonders are beyond words to describe.
